D.C.I.’s Pluralism, Inclusion, & Equity Series Presents: What is a “Latin@/x/é”?

October 9 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

What does it mean to be a Latin@/x/é?
Does this term divide us or unite us? Who decides which term is the correct one to use?
How does “Latino”—the word, the concept—contribute to strengthening social cohesion and community in America?
On the other hand, how does this term and idea undermine human connection and lead to separation?

These are some of the questions Hector Tobar explores in his award-winning book Our Migrant Souls, A Meditation on Race & the Meanings & Myths of “Latino.” These are not easy questions to answer, yet Tobar addresses these and many other issues relevant to Latino/a/x/é today. The book was recently awarded the 2024 Zocalo Prize, and here is what the Book Prize. The book is also the winner of the Kirkus Prize for nonfiction, named one of The New York Times’ 100 Notable Books of 2023, one of Time’s 100 must-read books of 2023, and Top Ten Books of 2023 at Chicago Public Library.

Join us for an engaging presentation by Hector Tobar and artist and author Obed Silva (who is quoted in the book). Copies of the books will be available during the event. Free Parking in Lots 4, 5, and 6.
